It’s time for you to “Func-off”

We love functional languages here at Sky and we hope that you do too? We want to see your completely over the top “Hello world!” application. Go absolutely nuts, the more mind bendingly put together the better. All we want to see at the end is “Hello world!”, but the winners will be judged in the weirdest journey to get there.

For teams not fluent in purely functional languages any attempts using C# or Java 8 lambdas will be included in the judging as long as you take a functional approach. In fact if you really feel like it then why not use Ruby or JavaScript instead? Bonus points for using more than one language!

What is the probability that any given piece of land will get planning permission approved? The Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA) data goes some way to answer this question but how can you expand upon this? Perhaps you could identify land value from proximity to schools, health centres or public transport using the open data on Data Mill North. Alternatively you could visualise the SHLAA data on a heatmap of available brownfield sites offset against the Environment Agencies flood data.

You can ring my ring my bell...

Futurelabs offers a free event space for volunteer led tech meetups in Leeds. To ensure we can keep costs down we are looking for a way to have a remote doorbell or preferably two for the front and back entrances of the building. Ideally we would like the door bell to be simply programmable so on any given night it will ring the mobile of the event organizer so that they know they have guests waiting outside if they can not get in. We would also like to turn it off so that after hours pranksters will not ring it and get someone's mobile at 3 in the morning! Ideally it would be great if we can give it two mobile numbers to ring at the same time or even better text one and ring the other. We would need to be able to add numbers simply on the day so we can be as flexible as possible. We will supply the doorbell hardware for this challenge.
